While reading the Next Magazine yesterday, I spotted a photo which was deeply moving.
The photo appeared in the article about Lobsang Sangay, prime minister of the Central Tibetan Administration, or more accurately, the Tibetan Government in Exile, which was situated in Dharamshala of India. Nevertheless, the photo that stirred me up was not any portrait related to the prime minister.
It was about martyrdom. A young guy, by setting himself on fire, appealed for the independence of Tibet. From the photo, we could see that the guy was fully covered in flame. He seemed to be rushing, yelling at something before his life came to the end. Apart from the martyr, there were quite a number of bystanders, hanging around the dying figure, without a trait of emotion. Nobody seemed to has offered help, nor be frightened by the act. According to the magazine, from Aug 2011 onwards, over 30 people have committed the same act to fight for the same thing. And more stunningly, 28 of those were monks.
So, here's the demonstration of "Give me Liberty, or give me Death!" And what a huge contrast it is, when comparing with those local rallies, which "over-reacted body bombardment" are always reported with the upmost magnification.
